Easy, Easy Knitted Slippers - A Tutorial

My mom taught me how to make these slippers many years ago and I have been teaching Rebekah and some girls how to knit them the last few weeks. They are SO easy and you only need to know 2 stitches - knit and purl.  These would be great for Christmas presents too. Once you get the hang of it, you should be able to finish a pair in a day.

This pattern is for regular width feet, you would have to reduce the amount you cast on for children's feet or maybe add more for men's feet.

PATTERN

Using 2 balls of 4 ply yarn (they can be the same or different colours) and size 10 (6mm) needles, cast on 29, leaving about a 12 inch yarn tail.

Row 2 - knit 9, purl 1, knit 9, purl 1, knit 9

Row 1 - knit all across

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until slipper is about 3 inches shorter than your foot.  End on row 1.

Toe;

Row 1 - knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, repeat across the row.

Row 2 - purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, repeat across the row.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 for 2 1/2 inches.

Cut yarn about a foot long and thread through a big needle.

Thread yarn back through all the stitches on the needle.

Then take the slipper off the needle.

Now, pull the yarn as tight as you can to close the toe and sew up to the end of the toe section, or just a bit further.

Fold the slipper in half, lining up the ridges and using the yarn from the heel, sew the heel up.

Now just enjoy your warm, toasty feet! Or, crochet flowers to attach to your slippers, which I will share later.

End Note: If you want to change the width of these slippers, you need to change it to a number by increments of 6 starting with 29. It has to be an odd number so that the toe pattern works. You can lower it or raise it (23,29,35).  So if you start by casting on 23, your row 2 would be knit 7, purl 1, knit 7, purl 1, knit 7.

  2. Thank you-this is much easier to understand than some of the videos I've seen. I'm wondering-in the picture where you gathered the toe, your piece looks almost square. In the other pictures, it looks long and thin. Is it a rectangle, folded or what? When you are knotting along, are you going lengthwise, like from heel to toe, or width wise, like from inside to outside of the foot? It looks like the needle is lengthwise, like pointing in the direction of the foot, and you are knitting from outside to inside.

    1. Hello Sunshine!
I am knitting these slippers width wise. When you are done knitting, it is a rectangle with the ridges (from the purl stitches) going heel to toe.
Feel free to ask any more questions if this didn't help:)
      God bless,
      Crystal

  4. hi, silly questions here..but is it 2 balls of yarn per slipper? for a total of 4 balls of 4 ply yarn? also, as far as the cast on and such (as you can see, i am relatively new to knitting things..scarves are my forté lol) the width is just fine..but as far as the length of the slipper..if i knit a size 9 for myself, but my husband is a mens sz 10..? just curious! thanks! i live outside of oslo, norway. love your blog :)

    1. Hi Heather
2 balls of yarn will make a pair, knitting both yarns together.
The cast on is the width, so you knit it to the length that you need. You can just measure your feet to see how long to knit them.
Let me know if this doesn't clear things up for you. Thank you so much for checking out my blog and God bless!

  5. Row 2 before Row 1?

    Also, Row 2: K9, P1, K9, P1 = only 20 sts
but 29 stitches to be cast on. Should I add K9 after the last P1?

This pattern was recommended to me by another knitter and I am so glad
    that she did!

    1. Hello,
Wow! I can't believe that I never noticed that mistake before. Thanks for pointing it out. Yes, we need one more K9 after the last P1. I will edit that.
Yes, after you cast on 29 stitches, you knit row 2.
      Thank you for your questions,
      Crystal

  6. Thank you so much for the instructions. I made these,as a kid and couldn't remember exactly how. Now, everyone is getting a pair and it's a great project for my grown daughters who crochet but don't knit, yet. Thanks, again!
